Now this is an area of expertise for myself as I am Irish. I do know that the country of Ireland is paganistic in tradition and so on.
That's why we have places like Newgrange etc. But we can also see this concept within our national holidays and ghaeilge names we give them a mighty fine example would be Samháin or oíche Samháin meaning today's' equivalent to Halloween. Was once huge in Ireland. We lit bone fires and walked between them for purification rituals. We can see how this has been turned into the modern day bonfire at Halloween. We also have dressing up or what was known as Guising so children and adults could walk amunst the evil not being noticed for fear of their human pure souls; and we also shaped turnips in scary faces to scare people away we now use pumpkins but we did once use turnips. the illuminated scary face would frighten evil spirit away, these spirits which passed the vail for revenge or fun; and the light from the lantern would bring our ansesters to us for one night in dreams to warn or guide us in our pursuits.
To get to the point the triple Godess was a healer a mother and a provider.
Her knowledge of magic is what some people believe is what made herbs to have healing properties.
The Triple Godess also stands for the ageing proccess of the woman . Just like the moon a nerw moon it is young like a woman eagerly waiting to get older. then to the full moon as an adult and mother. Who shines protection on her children and then finally the crone, a woman who is near passing and has much reverence and knowledge that many would not possess.
Back in the old days Herbs where the only medicine available people would go to the wise women to be healed by potions made usually from wild herbs that are still found today. These women where the nearest thing people had as a Doctor , nurse and midwife in those days.
Here is a question for all who possess the knowledge.
Do you think changing the holidays name back to Samháin will change peoples interpretation of the holiday in a more nationalistic hertigical way ?
You decide.
